Wheaton Precious Metals
Randy Smallwood, born in Grande Prairie, Alberta, is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Wheaton Precious Metals, a leading company specializing in silver and gold streaming agreements. His journey into the mining industry began in his youth when he worked as a field assistant staking claims, which ignited his passion for geology and exploration. He earned a Mining Technology diploma from the British Columbia Institute of Technology in 1990 and a Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1995.
His professional career commenced with roles as an exploration geologist at prominent companies, including Homestake Mining Company, Teck Corp., and Westmin Resources. In 1993, he joined Wheaton River Minerals Ltd., where he played a pivotal role in the company's growth. By 2001, he advanced to Director of Project Development, overseeing significant projects through Wheaton River's merger with Goldcorp in 2005.
In 2004, he was instrumental in founding Silver Wheaton, a company that pioneered the streaming finance model in the mining industry. It involves providing upfront capital to mining companies in exchange for the right to purchase a portion of their future silver and gold production. This model revolutionized mine financing, offering mining companies an alternative to traditional debt and equity financing.
Smallwood joined Silver Wheaton full-time in 2007 as Executive Vice President of Corporate Development, focusing on evaluating and acquiring new streaming opportunities. His leadership and vision led to his appointment as President in January 2010 and subsequently as CEO in April 2011. Under his guidance, the company expanded its portfolio beyond silver, prompting a rebranding to Wheaton Precious Metals to reflect its diversified interests in various precious metals.
He has been actively involved in industry organizations and philanthropic endeavours: Chair of the World Gold Council; Special Olympics British Columbia boards: the BC Cancer Foundation: MineralsEd BC, and Mining for Lifes. His contributions to the mining sector have been recognized through various accolades, including the British Columbia Institute of Technology Distinguished Alumni Award 2015. His strategic vision and dedication have solidified Wheaton Precious Metals' position as a precious metals streaming industry leader.
